Description
Death mask of John Keats, ex-collection Thomas de Valcourt. Signed H. G. to backside for Gherardi who made the casts. Handwritten provenance by de Valcourt reads: "…This is one of the few existing duplicates of the death mask…According to Professor H. W. L. Dana this mask is believed to have been the possession of Frances Brawn, the great love of Keat's life. Mr. Thomas Gold Appleton, the Boston Philanthropist, writer, and art collector purchased it at London in 1855. After he built his house at 10 Commonwealth Avenue the mask had a place of honor there. At his death in 1884, it became the property of his niece, Mrs. Richard H. Dana III who gave it to her son, Henry W. L. Dana. At his death in 1950, it came to me. Thomas H. de Valcourt." Measures approximately 7.5 x 5.25in. Old chips and wear, surface staining.
