Item Details
Description
Medieval Middle East/Central Asia, Persia, modern day Turkey, Seljuk (Seljuq) Empire, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. A pair of hammered bronze ornamental discs used as horse identification tags. The convex forms are centered with perforated attachment domes, and the shoulders are engraved with three trapezoidal panels that perhaps contain the name of the horse. The rim of each disc is adorned with four enclosed helical panels that are interrupted with four ringlets, and both discs are enveloped in wonderful golden-brown patina. Lucite display stands for photography purposes only. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 4.375" W x 1" H (11.1 cm x 2.5 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection acquired in the 1970's
