Item Details
Description
Ancient Near East, Syria, Bronze Age, 2300 to 2000 BCE. A wonderful leaded-bronze axe head with a cylindrical socketing shaft and a flared blade. The butt side of the socket features a broad fin with a central ridge. The lower portion of the socket contains two pointed flanges for securing the blade to a pole. The cutting edge of the blade is thick and not sharpened and may have served as a ritualistic piece for ceremonies. Such blades were created via the lost wax technique by skilled artisans. A wonderful example! Size: 3.75" L x .75" W x 2.25" H (9.5 cm x 1.9 cm x 5.7 cm)

Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA, acquired from Venus Gallery, Israel, in 2002
