Description
Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A fabulous wheel-thrown pottery vessel in the form of a standing male figure with his hands held together in the sampeah pose, which is an important gesture from Khmer culture used when one is greeting, showing respect, or praying to Buddha. Enveloped in a warm hue of reddish brown, the ancient vessel features a circular foot, a rotund body with a double-tiered, curved shoulder, a concave neck, and a flared rim. The lovely figure features coffee bean-shaped eyes, narrow brows, a button nose, and full lips curved to a gentle smile over a tripartite beard. A pair of naturalistic ears flanks his charming visage, as swooping incised lines along the body of the vessel represent his arms, culminating in a pair of petite hands. Size: 5" in diameter x 9.5" H (12.7 cm x 24.1 cm)
