Liz 7 by Andy Warhol was created in 1964 based off of a photograph taken in 1960 for the actress?’ film, Butterfield 8. Warhol?’s inspiration from Liz Taylor perhaps stems from his fascination with the glamour and prestige of fame. He took a particular interest in Liz Taylor and Marilyn Monroe as they were both fixtures in the tabloid headlines. He eternalized these movie stars in creating his famous screenprints, which elevated the images of celebrities from Hollywood icons to works of art. Warhol was known for being attracted to all things famous; his fascination with the private lives of celebrities was no different. Due to her multiple marriages and issues with her health, Liz Taylor was constantly featured in various tabloids, which drew Warhol to her presence even more. This particular piece was created while Taylor was at the top of her career, but was also extremely ill. The colors Warhol chose for the actress?’s face make her look as though she is glowing, which is the artist?’s way of depicting the most glamorous celebrity being constantly lit up by the flash of the camera.
