***Auction Highlight*** 1859 Seated Liberty Dollar $1 Graded pr65 cam By SEGS. Beginning in 1859, the mint made definite efforts to market proof coins to the then-fledgling coin collecting community, however, these plans did not meet with immediate success. Although 800 proof Seated Dollars were produced this year, it is unlikely that more than 450 examples were actually distributed. The balance of the coins were melted as unsold at the end of the year. This beautiful survivor is every bit the Gem. The eye appeal is nothing short of breathtaking, with a fully brilliant, snow-white appearance over each side. The glassy fields and fully impressed features are readily evident. We know of only one obverse die for this issue, and it is easily identifiable (at least with a loupe) by repunching on the base of the 1 in the date. We have included another PR65 Cam for your comparison, but it has never come to auction, so we have no realized price, the 3 that have come to auction have virtually no contrast and comparisons would be difficult.
