Item Details
Description
North America, Midwest / Eastern United States, Late Prehistoric Mississippian culture, ca. 1350 to 1700 CE. A remarkable granite stone fashioned and sanded into a smooth, round-edged disc (discoidal) - a game piece. Boasting hues of taupe, grey, and tan, the ancient piece has shallow wells sanded into its top and bottom that nearly reach the stone's rounded edge - suggesting it may be the Mound 72 variety of the Cahokia style, which were primarily used in Illinois and Missouri. Discoidals like this example were used to play the game of "chunkey" which had many different rules and styles of play. This discoidal would have been a treasured item, and could have been used for several generations. Size: 4.5" in diameter x 2.125" H (11.4 cm x 5.4 cm)

Provenance: private Kansas City, Missouri, USA collection; ex-John Townsend collection, acquired in the 1970s and earlier
