Item/Description: Somber, 19th Century framed lithograph by Ukranian/American artist, Todros Geller (1885 - 1949). It depicts the prophet Job, reclining and unclothed, surrounded by three elders in hooded cloaks who appear to be covering his nakedness. Dreamlike, doomful image, possibly representative of Job's visions or prophecy. Titled and numbered in pencil, lower left: "Job and his friends"; 2/12. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right: Todros Geller, '88. Paper on back adhered with tape with name of artist and birth, death date. Hanging wire.
Todros Geller was born in Vinnitsa in the Ukraine in 1889. He first studied art in Odessa, Russia, then in Montreal, where he immigrated in 1906. He was a Ukranian/American artist known for prints, woodcuts and stained glass. He lived most of his life in Chicago where he joined the Chicago Society of Artists and served as president, eventually being named the "Dean of Chicago Jewish Artists." His works often had Biblical themes. Geller exhibited widely in the United States and Palestine, before the foundation of the State of Israel in 1948.
