VITTORIO SELLA. The Crest of Siniolchum (Telephotograph) 4 miles off Zemu Glacier, 1899, Sella number HS 55. 15.1x11.1" gelatin silver print, printed 1901, mounted on 14x18" heavy gray board. Embossed with Vittorio Sella stamp in lower right of print. Inscribed in black ink on mount recto: Himalayas / Siniolchun, 22570 feet telephotograph from Zemu Valley. Inscribed in pencil mount verso: P 2231 55 / HS 55. Inscribed in pencil recto: , 87 / 586078 Inscribed in pencil mount verso: 22 31 Make under high / hold gradation high light / reduce 10" to 4/2 / cut equally on each side / f-1 / HS 55. Inscribed in black ink mount verso: Sikhim (or Sikkim) Himalayas.

Siniolchum is 6,888 m 22,598 ft east on the eastern ridge of Kanchenjunga. Douglas Freshfield said this peak was most superb triumph of mountain architecture and the most beautiful snow mountain in the world.

Siniolchum, which we here admired for the first time, is, and is likely to remain for many years to come, the Jungfrau or Virgin of the Sikhim Highlands. p 71

From the head of the Zemu Glacier the mountain is not well displayed; its summit, seen end on, becomes a mere needle, or rather, for the local Chamonix name, despite its associations, seems inadequate here, a spire of amazing sharpness, a silver spearhead. But from the slopes of the Thangchung La, Siniolchum is in full view from base to summit. Let the reader picture an Aiguille Verte, or Dent Blanche, twice as large and with double the amount of snow and ice clinging to its cliffs, and he will still be far from realising the beauty of the most beautiful snow mountain I have ever seen, possibly the most beautiful snow mountain in the world. p 125 This image is Illustrated as frontispiece in Round Kangchenjunga: A Narrative of Mountain Travel and Exploration, by Douglas Freshfield, London, Edward Arnold 1903
