Late 18th century AD. A page from 'The miracles of the Virgin Mary', representing the Virgin Mary suckling the Divine child, while Saint Joseph is watching on the right and a woman is drawing the Divine Blood of Mary from her foot with the use of a splinter; cavalrymen of Herod on the lower part of the scene.Cf. Ex central London gallery; previously in a UK private collection, in 2003.The Tä?amm?rä Maryam are miniate compilation texts of hundreds of tales about life of Virgin Mary and miracles spread by her. They have been in daily use since the 15th century as a central part of the ancient church liturgy of Ethiopia and Eritrea. Interestingly, the two 'evil' cavalrymen are depicted as soldiers of the Sultanate of Aussa, enemy of the Ethiopian Empire. [No Reserve]
