Description
15th-20th century AD. A bronze penannular bracelet or anklet with flared terminals. 114 grams, 84mm (3 1/4"). From an important North West London collection; acquired in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Manillas were used extensively as currency in West Africa from the 15th to the 20th century. During the Transatlantic slave trade, such bracelets were a medium of exchange for slaves.
