Spanish born artist Clave fled Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War in 1939, arriving in Paris. Clave would supplement his career as a painter by producing a great deal of illustrations, costume designs and set designs for theater and ballet productions by Ruth Page, Federico Garcia Lorca and others. Clave's period of theater design spanned roughly 1946 to 1954, when he elected to fully devote himself to only painting.

Sheet is tipped to all four corners, and the adhesive shows through to the recto. Two vertical creases running from upper center to lower center. Two horizontal creases along center, from left to right edge. Two small tear through sheet at lower center and lower left. Some rippling to sheet.
