American brass-mounted ebony Maritime sextant of Nautical interest, similar to the Davis backstaff quadrant, the reflecting navigation instrument was used to measure the angular distance between two visible objects, primary between an astronomical object and the horizon for the purposes of celestial navigation, in a painted wooden fitted case with a red triangle, the interior stamped "C. Bliss" and with interior paper label "David Baker, Mathematical Instrument Maker, No. 44 North Water Street, New Bedford" and further detailed. 14” H x 12” W x 3.5” D
