Description
A very fine old carved wooden sculpture of Akua'Ba,( Child of Akua) a wooden idol consecrated by priests and carried by women who hope to conceive a child. The flat, disc like head is an exaggerated convention of the Akan ideal of beauty, the flattened shape of the sculpture also serves a practical purpose, since women carry the figures against their backs wrapped in their skirts. A classic example with slender round face and head, and simple column like body. Obvious handling and wear. The Doll measures 8.25 x 3 inches. Provenance: Ex Collection Mona Gavigan , Volta Place Gallery, Washington DC, 1980. A scan of the original purchase receipt can me included.
