Description
A very rare fragmented Stone Idol shown with shackles suggesting the image of a slave or captured enemy. Stone carvings such as this figure known as a "Nomoli", have been found in excavations of southeastern Sierra Leone as well as in Liberia. They are believed to be of great age, and were likely made by peoples ancestral to the Sherbro dating from a period well before the arrival of Europeans in 1463. This Kissi Nomoli fragment of bound figure measures 4.25 inches tall ( 5.5 inches tall on custom base which is included). Provenance: Ex. Leonard Kahan Gallery, NY 1980's
