Description
**Originally Listed At $200**
Oceania, Polynesia, Fiji Islands, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A broad, spade-shaped fan constructed from strands of coconut leaves (drau ni niu) and coconut sennet fibers (magimagi) in a traditional three-ply braiding technique known as tali tolu. Dark, naturally dyed fibers are woven into the fan body and create a visually appealing bi-chrome presentation. The points along the lateral sides as well as the top enable ample air movement given its structural flexibility when fanned via the tightly woven handle underneath. Cf. The Auckland War Memorial Museum (Tamaki Paenga Hira), accession number 1969.33
