(Disneyland, 1969) A large and remarkable WED Imagineering blueline design print of the Haunted Mansion drawn by Imagineer Dan Williams. Dated in the print 04-3-69, the 1/8":1' scale Key Area & Location Plan depicts an overview of the entire attraction with every area and scenic detail meticulously labeled and/or numbered. All of the most memorable and beloved elements of the manse are present in this rendering, as the guest experience begins in the Elevators, leading into the Picture Gallery, onto the innovative Doom Buggy Loading Belt Area, through the Endless Gallery, the Corridor of Doors, the Conservatory, the Clock Hall, Seance Circle, the Grand Hall, the Attic, the Graveyard, passing the iconic Hitch Hikers section, and ending in the final Unload Area. Given that the mansion opened just four months after the creation of this Layout, this is one of the most complete and finalized preliminary drawings made of the attraction. In the original compendium of design documents created during the planning stages of the ride, this would have been the master rendering of the Mansion that provided context for all the subsequent detail plans and schematics. The creation of this document, then, was an indispensable step in solidifying the visions of Imagineers Marc Davis, X Atencio, Claude Coats, Rolly Crump, Yale Gracey, etc. and in designing the framework for the completion of this well-loved attraction. Claude Coats has signed his approval in the print and the blueline retains a partially legible internal WED inkstamp reading, "Received May [2]6 19[69]." Measuring 35.25"x43.5", the print has been linen-backed for its preservation, and after conservation efforts, presents in good condition. While no restoration was performed, the linen-backing addressed a number of condition issues, either reversing or mitigating the effects of prior damage and preventing future deterioration. The left border is unevenly trimmed, there is a missing 2.5"x2" chunk at upper right. A 19" tear runs from the missing portion to the top margin, with a 3.5" tributary tear running vertically from the initial instance of separation. Additionally there is some moisture staining at upper right, a tide line running the vertical span of the piece at far left, and a few scattered stress lines ranging in size from 2"-4". Though these defects are evident upon inspection, they do not detract from the overall appearance of this important piece.
