Description
A fascinating example of the Mbole sculpture known as "Ofika", carved in a particular posture associated with public hangings. Tribunals and executions by hanging are a feared prerogative of the all powerful Lilwa men's association, which controls government, the judiciary and other aspects of life. These figures are hung by ropes in sacred places, and shown to newly initiated members of the Lilwa. They are supposed to warn new initiates about exposing secrets of the Lilwa association. The sculpture figure is well worn darkened wood with a mineral pigment on face and chest. The sculpture has been custom mounted and measures 17.5 inches tall on its base ( 15.25 sculpture itself.) .
Condition
Restoration and repair to phallus and one leg, well handled patina, well worn.
