Description
Rosa Bonheur (France, 1822 -1899); "Ploughing in the Nivernais"; oil on canvas signed lower left corner recto, "Rosa Bonheur / Paris '82," now mounted to board and framed. Height of art 25 1/2 inches (64.7 cm.) X width of art 50 1/4 inches (127.5 cm.), half size of the original. NOTE: The original of "Plowing in the Nivernais" is Rosa Bonheur's first masterpiece painted before "The Horse Fair" now at the Met in NYC. Commissioned by the French Government and winner of the First Prize in 1849, it was initially intended for the museum in Lyon but was instead exhibited in the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris and was a featured exhibit at the 1889 World Fair. The painting was moved to the Louvre and now is in the Musée d'Orsay. Bonheur made a number of copies, one of which is in the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art and her students were able to make copies from the original.
