Title: 1868 map of Calif. and the West with early state boundaries

Description: "Nice copperplate engraved map of western U. S. showing unsettled borders for Nevada, Utah and Arizona Territory. “XIX California, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and Washington” found in Mitchell’s 1868 New Reference Atlas” and published by E. H. Butler. Wyoming shown uncolored as “Attached to Dakota.” Washington and Montana still identified as territories. In this uncommon map, Nevada’s lower point is still part of Arizona, and its eastern border has yet to push eastward, eventually defining the western border of Utah. Idaho’s border near what would become Wyoming is still somewhat muddled. In Arizona there are clear indications where the “Gold Region” and “Silver Region” lie. Locations of numerous Indian tribes dot the state’s landscape. Throughout the map, various mail and other routes are clearly plotted. Another sizeable Gold Region is shown between upper eastern boundary of Idaho and western boundary of Montana. Tiny sulfide spot near Ft. Mohaves, Arizona. Light stains in both right corners. 8.125 x 11"
