Item Details
Description
  • Title: Scarce Commercial Flags of Nations, Colton 1868
  • Description: A fascinating overview in flags of the world political situation for the year 1868 (the American flag shows just 40 stars.) In the mid-19th century, the world was controlled mostly by a few European powers who used maritime strength to dictate international treaties and agreements. The political and commercial exchange between the colony and colonizer was often done via the sea and required specific methods of shipboard communication and identification. The Colton publishing firm issued this flag chart in 1868 in reference to this. The standards shown within the image are those flags officially recognized by contemporary maritime laws. A review of the designs within the image shows a continually unfolding political situation that would persist through the 19th and 20th centuries. For instance, the short lived North German Confederation, seen in the upper right and led by Prussia, would soon evolve into the powerful German Empire and confront France for domination of Europe. The imperial flag of Japan notes the political power of the shogunate, even though the emperor returned to power in January, 1868, under the Meji Restoration. Spain, lower right, would see Queen Isabella II deposed that same year in the Glorious Revolution. Other revolutions were also taking place or would shortly begin after publication of this document--Poland, Ireland, and Cuba to name a few. Specialized organizations, like the Russian American Company, are also represented due to their ships’ presence on the high seas. Because of the sale of Alaska in 1867, this would be the last year that particular flag would be seen. Tables running down the sides and along the bottom show Maryats Code of Commercial Signals, Rogers Code of Commercial Signals and the British Admiralty Code of Commercial Signals. “National Commercial Flags of All Nations,” published 1868 by G. W. & C. B. Colton. It is not common to find this item in complete condition. This two-page item was placed in the front of the atlas, which usually took the brunt of wear. Because of this, the National Commercial Flags plate is often found badly chipped or in much worse condition. This particular plate was originally found with some damage. Those conditions have now been repaired using the ancient Japanese kozu method which is reversible and lasts a thousand years. 17 x 27
