Description
Sir Mark Sykes Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5.75" x 7.5", Cairo; June 2, 1917. Addressed to a "Littleton" on Shepheard’s Hotel stationery, the letter reads in full: "Please let me hasten to thank you very much indeed for all you did for our party in connection with our journey to Cairo. I tried to catch you before we left but you had just gone again many thanks." Written during World War I while Sykes was negotiating the language of the Balfour Declaration, which was issued by the British government declaring their support for a Jewish home in Palestine. Sykes was a strong pro-Zionist during this period and played a crucial role in the passage of the Declaration. Condition: Lightly rubbed and toned from age. Smoothed mail folds.
