each crafted with rosewood and silver, the spade with hallmark for George Scriven & Co. of Madras, with matching inscriptions: "Madras Railway, Used in the cutting of the first turf by His Excellency Liuet. General, The Right Honorable Sir Henry Pottinger, G.C.B., Governor of Fort St. George, 9th June 1853"
