Astonishing Set of Seven Ink-stones placed in a snug-fitting wooden carrying container. An inkstone is a stone mortar for the crushing pigment into ink. Traditional Chinese ink was usually hardened into sticks for easier transportation and conservation. Even a minor quantity of liquid could be applied to the end of a pigment-stick, and that end would be pulverized with the flat surface of the ink stone. The inkstone, together with the brush, pigment (stick) and paper, are the four writing tools traditionally known as the Four Treasures of the Study. Each stone is smooth and expertly carved for the most efficient use of liquid ink in scholarly work or artform.
