Description
VIVIEN LEIGH.Millefiori paperweight. Italy, ca. 1950.Murano glass.Provenance: Gift from the heirs of the actress to her present owner. Private collection Elvira Clara Cirera Bonet.Measures 4 x 6 x 6 cm.This paperweight was part of the decoration of Vivien Leigh's office. It is a globular paperweight made of Murano glass, whose decoration presents a dynamic and expressive design. Called Millefiori is a glass technique that produces distinctive decorative patterns in glassware. The term millefiori is a combination of the Italian words "mille" (thousand) and "fiori" (flowers). Murano's reputation as a glassmaking center was born when the Republic of Venice, fearing fires and the destruction of the city's wooden buildings, ordered glassmakers to move their foundries to Murano in 1291. Murano glass is still associated with Venetian glass. The various homes in which Vivien Leigh lived gave free rein to his decorative ability, creating an eclectic and varied ornamental line based on the collection of luxurious, sophisticated and high quality objects.
