Item Details
Description
VIVIEN LEIGH.English school of the late 19th-early 20th century."Siamese".Mixed media on paper.Signed with initials FW-G in the lower right corner.Provenance: Elvira Clara Cirera Bonet Collection.Measurements: 8 x 8 cm; 5 x 9.5 cm (frame). This drawing on paper belonging to Vivien Leigh - possibly part of the decoration of one of her London homes - reveals the "Gone with the Wind" actress's passion for Siamese cats. When in 1946 her husband Lawrence Olivier gave her "New Boy", a Siamese feline named after the New Theatre in London where the actor worked regularly, Vivien discovered her passion for these animals. For Leigh, Siamese cats were synonymous with fidelity and intelligence (she even had 16 kittens at a time, according to her own daughter, Susanne Leigh) and became her pet of trust, as attested by the numerous photographic documents in which the acclaimed actress appears surrounded by such charismatic animals.
