Suzuki Harunobu (1725-1770) and attributed to Shiba Kokan (1747-1818)
Edo period (1615-1868), circa late 1760s and circa 1774
Three chuban yoko-e shunga prints; two by Harunobu, the first of Shiohama no shugetsu (Autumn Moon Over Shiohama Beach) from the series Furyu Edo hakkei (Fashionable Eight Views of Edo), depicting a young couple making love on a veranda overlooking an enden (salt evaporation pond) on the seashore, unsigned, 20.2cm x 25cm (8in x 9 7/8in); the second, no.10, from the series Furyu Enshoku Mane'emon (Elegant Erotic Mane'emon), depicting an elderly man spying on a young couple making love in a sericulture room, the miniature man Mane'emon crawling on the floor watching, unsigned, 20.9cm x 27.4cm (28¼in x 10 13/16in); the last attributed to Shiba Kokan, probably from the series Mamesuke (Bean Man), depicting a couple making love on a futon positioned in front of a folding painted screen, inscribed Harunobu ga, 18.5cm x 25.5cm (7 5/16in x 10 1/16in). Including but not limited to the following:
1) Shirohama beach (illustrated as top image in the catalogue):
Fairly good impression and slightly faded colour with slight toning. A centre-fold mark. Oxidization on shoji and veranda where original red colour almost faded. Slightly trimmed, creased, rubbed, foxed. Rather soiled, especially along the right edge. Several tears and areas of paper missing around the edges. Old paper residue at the four corners on verso.
2) Mane'emon no.10 (illustrated as middle image in the catalogue):
Good impression and good colour with very slight toning. A centre-fold mark.
Areas of minor oxidization here and there. Slightly trimmed, rubbed, creased and soiled, especially around the edges. Many scattered minor foxing spots in the upper section. A few probable minor paper restorations.
3) Mamesuke (illustrated as lower image in the catalogue):
Good impression and good colour with slight toning. A faint centre-fold mark.
Slightly trimmed, especially along the top edge, resulting in the partial loss of the dialogue cartouche. Slightly creased, rubbed and soiled, especially along the edges, the most noticeable crease: a vertical crease, caused by folding, of approx., 14cm long close to the left edge. A tiny area of paper missing along the top edge. A narrow band of blue-coloured residue along the top and bottom edges. A narrow band of paper slip reinforcing the the right edge on verso.
