Item Details
Description
Theo Van Rysselberghe (Belgian, 1862-1926). "The Cart from Gouda" etching on paper, 1893. A lively depiction of a four wheel cart by Theo van Rysselberghe, a Belgian artist perhaps best known for his Neo-Impressionist compositions. The etching is inscribed "Gouda Oct. 93" on the upper left and features the artist's red stamp comprised of his initials on the lower right. Influenced by Georges Seurat, Van Rysselberghe also applied a scientific approach to color theory to his art. He studied at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and was a friend to American ex-patriate artists William Merritt Chase and John Singer Sargent. His artistic style evolved from Realism to Impressionism, and when he visited Paris and saw the works of Seurat in the 1890s, he began to employ Post-Impressionist Pointillism in his works. Finally, by the turn of the century, Van Rysselberghe focused on creating decorative arts in the Art Nouveau style. Size of plate mark: 7" L x 5.75" W (17.8 cm x 14.6 cm) Size of sheet: 9.375" L x 6" W (23.8 cm x 15.2 cm) Size of matte: 17.75" L x 13.875" W (45.1 cm x 35.2 cm)

Van Rysselberghe’s works are held in major museum collections including the National Gallery in London, the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York. One may find another "The Cart from Gouda" print in the collection of the Clark Art Institute (accession number 1989.39).

Provenance: ex-estate of Roy Green, Birmingham, Alabama acquired before 2015 from major New York galleries

Condition
The etching is inscribed "Gouda Oct. 93" on the upper left and features the artist's red stamp comprised of his initials on the lower right. There is also a stamp marked "Paris" in the middle on the verso. Minor stains to the sheet that do not impact the image. Right edge of sheet is cut a bit unevenly, but this is outside the plate mark and in no way affects the image. Etching is set in a protective matte, but is not attached and can be removed from it.
