Gouache on heavy watercolor paper (probably Arches), untitled, signed* with the artist's initials (Alma Woodsey Thomas, 1891-1978). Circa 1971-1974. 11 3/8 x 15 1/4 inches. Very good condition, having no visible damage or repairs. Removed from frame for inspection and shipping. Sold unframed.

This work appears to be from the artist's "Atmospheric Effects" series.

Provenance: Property of a private collector, Texas. Acquired by bequest from the original owner, Carmel, California, circa 1990.

Provenance Update: Additional information has been obtained from the consignor stating that this watercolor was acquired by his long time friend in Carmel, California, from Marian Davis, Baltimore, Maryland, in 1984. Marian Davis was acquainted with Alma Thomas through her art studies. It is believed that Marian Davis may have introduced the consignor's friend in Carmel to Alma Thomas when he attended an exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Lot Note: Preston Hall Gallery sold another watercolor from this same collection in 2018. That watercolor was subsequently resold at Treadway Auctions (Cincinnati, Ohio) on September 15, 2019 for $149,000 (including buyer's commission), setting a record price for a work on paper by the artist.
