Description
A Russian porcelain two-handled cup, Imperial Porcelain Factory, Saint Petersburg, circa 1810. The front centered with a bisque porcelain bas-relied of Emperor Alexander I in classical guise on a tooled gilt oval panel against a lattice and dot ground, the lower border with molded acanthus leaves, the handles formed as a cornucopia of multiple tiny, molded flowers with matt gilding, the interior with three scattered gilt blossoms, a typical strategy for concealing flaws in the 18th and 19th centuries, the underside marked only with 10 in the paste. Height: 3 3/4 in. (9.5 cm). Width over handles: 5 3/4 in. (14.6 cm).For a comparable two-handled cup with biscuit bas-relief portraits of Alexander I and Empress Elizaveta Alexeevna, also by the Imperial Porcelain Factory and unmarked, in the collection of the State Historical Museum, Moscow, seeRusskii farfor. 250 let istorii(Moscow: Avangard, 1995), p. 76.
