Item Details
Description
RUSSIAN IMPERIAL SILVER CLOISONNE CHALICE, 1908 3d ARTEL
Extremely nice job. Eastern Europe, Russia, St. Petersburg, Imperial Period ca. 1908 to 1917 CE.
A pretty high quality silver (92.5%) chalice with a gold wash and a classic bell shaped cup adorned with cloisonne patterns on the exterior.
The cup is supported on a hollow baluster-shaped stem and domed foot. The cloisonne is applied in embossed teardrop shapes across the exterior walls and on the foot with a silver rope twist border and spiraling shapes on a blue ground.
The motifs within the rope borders consist of flowers and peacocks in pastel shades of pink, blue, white, green, and orange.
Two hallmarks are stamped below the rim on the exterior of the bowl; one indicates the 3rd Artel, a cooperative of artisans skilled in different crafts that came together to produce these incredible pieces. This artel even made works for Faberge and for the Imperial Family!
The other hallmark is a face in profile to the right of the numbers "84" for the Russian sterling silver standard implemented by Tsar Nicholas II in 1908.
This is a very special piece and beautifully crafted!
