Native American, Southeast or Midwest, Mississippian, ca. 980 to 1380 CE. A stunning handmade pottery jar in mottled hues of grey and brown with spots of creamy white pigment. Sitting on a round yet stable base, the lovely vessel displays a bulbous body and short neck with a wide, gently flared rim. The body of the vessel is intricately incised in a technique known as Ranch Incised, which is comprised of a series of parallel curved lines creating a layered effect that resembles freshwater fish scales. Alternatively, the neck boasts a Campbell Applique technique consisting of a pattern of slender vertical embellishments, each with a wavy edge. A delicate motif of incised dots called the Campbells Punctated technique decorates the rim. Size: 6.25" in diameter x 4.25" H (15.9 cm x 10.8 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

TL holes on top of rim and base. Petite aperture on edge of shoulder. Stable hairline fissure from rim down side to base. Expected surface wear with chips to rim, commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent with light patina.
