Item Details
Description
From the Estate of Rear Admiral William Henry Allen comes this pair of Large Brass and Glass Ship Lanterns from the USS Hartford. Electrified. Each 8"x8"x16 1/2". Weight combined 14 pds. USS Hartford, a sloop-of-war, steamer, was the first ship of the United States Navy named for Hartford, the capital of Connecticut. Hartford served in several prominent campaigns in the American Civil War as the flagship of David G. Farragut, most notably the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. She survived until 1956, when she sank awaiting restoration at Norfolk, Virginia. In October 1912 she was transferred to Charleston, for use as a station ship. Hartford remained at Charleston until moved to Washington, D.C., on 18 October 1938. President Franklin Roosevelt wanted to build a naval museum there featuring the Hartford, USS Olympia, and a four-stack destroyer from World War I. When Roosevelt died, plans to establish this museum and to save the ships were abandoned. On 19 October 1945, Hartford was towed to the Norfolk Navy Yard and classified as a relic. The ship was allowed to deteriorate, and as a result, Hartford sank at her berth on 20 November 1956. She proved to be beyond salvage and was subsequently dismantled. NO IN HOUSE SHIPPING.
