Description
A fantastically spiky, small-crystal dark amethyst geode specimen section, with some larger crystals of quartz near its base. Originally from South America, Bolivia, this stunning piece is millions and millions of years old. The piece is roughly triangular, studded with regularly-shaped crystaline explosions of deep, rich purple color. Geodes are formed when an exterior rock is lined with mineral materials and weathers more slowly than surrounding bedrock. The interior lining is a druse, a coating of fine crystals on a rock surface. These fascinating stones require specific types of geological environments to form, specifically volcanic deposits where the voids in lava flows are filled in with the agate, quartz, and other geode-forming minerals, or sedimentary rocks where there are gas-filled voids that can be filled by minerals. As a result, they are relatively rare, and found in special locations. Total Weight = 29.5 pounds. Size: 9.35" W x 11.8" H (23.7 cm x 30 cm); 15.5" H (39.4 cm) on included custom stand. Provenance: ex-private Bolivian collection. Comes with an Artemis Gallery C.O.A.
