Item Details

Description

A complete certificate of promotion issued to Thomas J. Riley, Company G 2nd Iowa Infantry on 9/27/1864, with his promotion to corporal dated 12/24/1863. Bears the signatures of Adjutant Voltaire P. Twombly, a thrice-wounded Medal of Honor recipient, and regimental commander Capt. John A. Duckworth. The recipient of the certificate, Thomas J. Riley, enlisted as a private on 8/13/1862 and mustered in thirteen days later. He was mustered out on 5/30/1865 and returned home to Monterey, Iowa.
