Description
19th century 14K yellow gold mourning brooch with enamel accents, made for Lucy Bakewell Audubon, wife of ornithologist and naturalist, John James Audubon. Featuring human hair from Mrs. Audubon, and an inscription on the back "Hair of Mrs. Lucy Audubon wife of the naturalist J.J. Audubon."
Lucy Bakewell Audubon (1787-1874) was an educator and philanthropist. She was a well educated woman, having attended a boarding school in her youth and reading endlessly as she became an adult. While her husband J.J. Audubon worked on his drawings and paintings for The Birds of America, she worked tirelessly to keep their home and children taken care of. Many believe that her being the breadwinner for the family is largely the reason J.J. Audubon was able to finish his first collection and gain success.Â
