Description
Burgdorff, Ferdinand (American/Cleveland/California, 1881-1975), Steelmaking Nocturne, c.1910s, oil on canvas, old wax relining, signed (somewhat legible) and partially dated (19??) lower right, 18.25 x 21.5 inches, in a wood frame 26.5 x 29.5 inches. Burgdorff was born in Cleveland where he studied art. In his early years he would sell pieces to finance his world travels, eventually settling in the American West. This is a rare, early steelmaking scene and one of the few known works of his to show the industrial side of his hometown.
Condition
Overall Fair condition, with general crazing, a noticeable horizontal crease along the middle; light layer of surface dust; evidence of inpainting to the center of the painting, primarily to the top edge of the smoke where the crease is, also inpainting to the upper edge; bottom register heavily varnished; no evidence of inpainting at or around the signature.
