Description
**First Time At Auction**
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Ignazia, ca. 4th century BCE. A fabulous hand painted ceramic skyphos (deep wine glass) from the Apulia region of southern Italy artfully decorated in hues of white, terracotta, burgundy, and tan. Flanked atop by two horizontal ear-shaped handles, its bulbous body tapers towards the base and is supported by a terracotta circular foot outlined in black paint. This blackware vessel is adorned with a decorative program of multiple registers, including (from top to bottom): repeated horizontal tongues of white bounded by incised lines above and below, a polychromatic wavy band of tan, white, and burgundy surrounded by incised lines, a row of white and tan dots, a single burgundy stripe, and bountiful hanging grape vines on one side - a pair of white dotted bands separated by two incised lines on the other side. The black ground boasts wonderful iridescence. Size: 5.75" L with handles x 3.75" W without handles x 3.875" H (14.6 cm x 9.5 cm x 9.8 cm)
The Apulia region of southern Italy is known for employing additional paints to the red-figure painting technique. These pigments, applied on top of the glaze after an object was fired, are referred to as "fugitive pigments". The elaborate motif dressing this skyphos is a wonderful example of both this technique and impeccable conservation.
