Description
**First Time At Auction**
Ancient seas, Russia, Jurassic period, 201.3 to 145 Million years ago. A stunning collection of 8 ammonite fossils from the Quenstedtoceras genus that have been grouped to form a magnificent display. Five of the ammonites are complete specimens, while the rest are partial sections of shells that support the others. The Quenstedtoceras ammonite is known for the closed spirals and ribbed shells which are wonderfully exemplified here. The shells have also opalized and have a red and pink iridescent glimmer. The stone they are arranged on has been coated with flecks of pyrite to enhance these glimmering fossils. Ammonites are an extinct marine mollusk that were related to the living coleoid family, including octopus and squid. The name "ammonite" came from Pliny the Elder after the Egyptian god Ammon, who was typically depicted wearing ram's horns that Pliny thought these fossils resembled. A truly alluring piece of prehistoric history that has been tastefully preserved! Size: 3" L x 3" W x 5" H (7.6 cm x 7.6 cm x 12.7 cm)
Provenance: ex-Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired prior to 2010
