AN ITALIAN RENAISSANCE STYLE WALNUT CABINET ON CHEST WITH MARBLE APPLIQUES
Early 20th Century
The broken pediment is supported by acanthus carved scrolls and sits above a cornice of carved demilune patera and a frieze of four carved corbels flanked by red Verona marble cabochons and bevel square cut appliqués. The frieze is supported by turned fluted columns and a pair of locking doors with molded frames and reserves with verte marble beveled appliqué and richly carved bas relief doors of scroll strapwork that supports a cameo of a mythical horse and fish galloping and swimming in the sea. The doors are flanked by carved panes with veined verte marble and conceal a movable shelf. The lower cabinet with molded edge and acanthus corbels with pendant dentils features a frieze drawer with a wonderfully carved lion mask and red Verona marble appliqués. The lower cabinet body features five addition red Verona appliqués surrounding a pair of locking doors with molded frames and hand carved bas relief reserves of elaborately carved swans swimming among the reeds. Raised on a stepped and molded apron with stepped plinth block legs: includes key.
Some shrinkage to upper left door. Minor wear and minor dents to feet and apron. One chip on right lower body lip. 117 ½ x 60 ½ x 25 inches (298.5 x 153.7 x 63.5 cm)
