A Chinese Carved Wooden Deity Sculpture
mid 20th century, a deity figure carved from a single block of wood, painted in red, green and blue with raised gilt accents, the figure is seated in sedan chair with dragon head handles, his face has very detailed facial features and he wears a robe with elaborate decoration, registers along base are painted with the longevity symbols of pine and bamboo, blue stones are inlaid on the corners.
15 3/4 x 8 1/4 x 7 1/2 in.
From the Estate of the late Joseph D. Rowand, Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Joe Rowand was instrumental in developing a contemporary art scene in North Carolina. After studying in New York City at Parsons, he brought the big city art feel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina when he opened Somerhill Gallery in 1972. His gallery served as an epicenter for collectors and artists to gather and grow for over thirty years.

Stress crack to wood down center and to right and some to reverse; loss of one blue stone from base; some chips to edges of hat and sedan chair; wear and water marks to bottom edges of base; appears that previous facial hair is lost; losses to painted surface.
