Description
Tribal-Style Cowhide Drum
20th century, consisting of a log section stripped of bark and fitted with hide; includes conforming mallet.
22-1/2 x 15 in.
Originally one of a pair, Joe and Maud Gatewood bought these while vacationing in Paris from a prominent antique store. According to Joe, Maud saw them, grabbed them and said to him "Here, you're buying this." He did and she bought the other. Joe loved the drum for the memories as much as for the appearance.
From the Estate of the late Joseph D. Rowand, Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Joe Rowand was instrumental in developing a contemporary art scene in North Carolina. After studying in New York City at Parsons, he brought the big city art feel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina when he opened Somerhill Gallery in 1972. His gallery served as an epicenter for collectors and artists to gather and grow for over thirty years.
