Description
"Le Tricorne" mixed media on paper 16 x 16 inches. signed and dated 1919. framed. 15 x 15 inches (overall). A maquette for Picasso's largest work by the same title on exhibit at the New-York Historical Society, New York City. Provenance: Both my aunt and grandmother studied in Europe in the 1920's. My grandmother at the Sorbonne and aunt in England. My great aunt became a professor of English history at Rutgers and lived in New York City for decades. Each enjoyed collecting objects from their travels. My aunt collected rare books and art. Each led an interesting life with uncommon travels which was afforded to them through their uncle who owned mills in Maine. They were some of the first women to fly to Asia on a trip to buy silk with their uncle. This painting was discovered in a house owned by my great aunt which was passed down to her from her uncle in the late 1930s. The home was later inherited by my father and now me. There were several paintings kept in a closet for 50 years (including this example) which were left by her at the time of the passing of the house to my father and now to me.

TERMS OF AUTHENTICITY: The Seller and John McInnis Auctioneers, LLC believe this painting, Lot 384, in our June 26th Fine Art Auction as described in the auction catalog and is thought to be a maquette, or study, for the full scale curtain “Le Tricorne” currently on display at the New York Historical Society. This painting is a unique work of art, and is explicitly understood and warrantied to not be a print, lithograph or any such multiple works, but rather a unique mixed media on paper by Pablo Picasso with provenance of ownership dating back to the 1920’s. Accordingly, the Buyer shall have a minimum of (120) days and up to an extended time of an additional (240) days once a plan is agreed upon by the buyer and the auction house for the authentication, following payment of the full purchase price to the auctioneer to be held in escrow. We fully understand that the Covid situation may affect the turn around and we will work with the purchaser on an agreed time frame to have this work authenticated. The Buyer assumes all costs associated with the authentication and shipping of this painting to and from The Claude Picasso Administration. Regardless of any escrow agreement between the consignor and John McInnis Auctioneers, LLC, the auction house agrees herein will be explicitly liable for 100% of the hammer price plus buyer’s premium to the buyer in the event that the lot does not receive a positive verdict from the Claude Picasso Administration that the work is an original and authentic and unique work painted by the hand of the Pablo Picasso.
