Description:

James Abbott McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903), Chelsea, Etching, signed in the plate with Butterfly monogram, lower right, depicting Chelsea church and Battersea bridge matted and framed. Frame size: 15 1/2 in. x 18 in.

James Abbott Mcneill Whistler was an influential Gilded Age American artist. Whistler explored impressionism, symbolism, art nouveau, and tonalism in his paintings and etchings of landscapes, figures, and portraits. Born in Massachusetts in 1834, Whistler spend most of his life in Europe. He studied at the Imperial Academy of Science in Russia, the United States Military Academy at West Point, Ecole Imperiale et Speciale de Dessine and the Academie Gleyre in France. During his studies and travels Whistler befriend artists such as Rossetti, Courbet, Daubigny, and Monet. During the late 1800's he achieved great notoriety as an international artist. His works were acquired by private collections, he received numerous awards and exhibitions, and he was elected to associations such as the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, the Legion d'Honneur, and the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers. After Whistlers death in 1903 memorial exhibitions and retrospectives of his work were held at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the International Society in London, and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Today Whistlers work can be found in numerous private and public collections across the globe.
