Description
ASHEVAK TUNNILLIE (1956-2018) KINNGAIT (CAPE DORSET)
Polar Bear Following a Scent,
stone, 10.25 x 20 x 7 in (26 x 50.8 x 17.8 cm)
signed, "ᐊᓯᕙ / ᑐᓂᓕ".
Provenance
Private Collection, Ottawa.
The son of noted artists Qavaroak and Tayaraq Tunnillie (see Lot 89), Ashevak began carving after he moved his family from Kinngait to an outpost camp, where he lived for about fifteen years. Like his parents, Ashevak Tunnillie became widely recognized for his skillful depictions of Arctic wildlife, and in particular, polar bears. Here, the artist skillfully depicts the lumbering creature with its head down following the scent of an unseen prey.
