I love the delicate painting of swallows and flowers on the glass insert. The heavy base metal was cast in a design of a handled urn. The pressed glass insert has a scalloped rim and coin dimple body. The glass is cranberry at the top and then transitions clear at the base. The glass is painted with three flying swallows amidst flowers, and the mouth rim is gilded. The glass painting is fun, colorful and bright. The mark on the base of the silver plate urn reads JAMES W TUFTS QUADRUPLE PLATE BOSTON WARRANTED and the production number 2457. The wording is in a circle with a star in the center and the letter T. There is numbering etched in the base surface. They are the numbers 798 and 4009. MEASUREMENTS 8” (20.3 cm) tall x 6 7/8” (17.5 cm) wide x 3 ½” (8.9 cm) deep. Weighs 1 lb 6.9 oz (650 g) CONDITION The metal base has no crack, dents, or breaks. There is silver loss but the piece still has some silver and it has polished up somewhat. The glass has no cracks, chips, or breaks. There are losses on the gilding around the mouth rim and the plant stems, and there is some wear to the glass insert where it is held by the metal, particularly around the foot. I see very little wear to the colorful enamels. A great silver plate piece by the premier silver plate company to add to a collection. It would look great with window light streaming through the glass.
