Description
HOMER, Winslow, illustrator; and James Russell LOWELL. The Courtin'. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1874. Small quarto. Title and 7 silhouette plates after Homer, reproduced in heliotype from drawings, and printed in black. Publisher's pictorial russet cloth, stamped in black and gilt. Lovely example of a pictorial work by Winslow Homer, illustrating a James Russell Lowell poem. The Courtin and Surrey of Eagles Nest are the only books illustrated wholly by Homer. Although reproduced from drawings by heliotype, a forerunner of the collotype process, The Courtin is included as a lively example of Americana (The Artist and the Book). Artist and the Book 134; Hamilton 860.
