Description
Two dark blue historical Staffordshire plates. The first titled "Landing of Gen Lafayette at Castle Garden New York on 16 August 1824" (Castle Garden is also known as Fort Clinton which stands in Battery Park, Manhattan, New York) - the plate commemorates Lafayette, as the last surviving French general of the Rev. War, during his American tour in 1824-1825 - it is stamped on reverse ''Clews Warranted Staffordshire.'' - very good condition, no chips, cracks or repairs - 7 3/4" diameter; the second depicting a French building with figures near stream signed on reverse "Moulin Sur La Marne / A. Charenton" - from Enoch Wood & Sons French View Series with the impressed mark of "E. Wood & Sons Burslem" - 9 1/4" diameter - very good condition, no chips, cracks or repairs. Both circa 1825. Provenance: From the James Becker collection, Walden NY.
