Description
The girl depicted in full length wearing a blue dress with lace trim and a coral necklace, seated on the ground amidst a mountainous landscape, tenderly holding her dog; period strainer 29 1/2” x 36”, frame 33” x 39”. This 19th C. portrait contains several juxtaposing elements, seamlessly combined to exemplify true American class. The full length orientation, the child’s elegant attire, and content disposition all indicate comfortable wealth; however, she is also depicted in a casual manner seated on the ground in a rugged landscape with an arm wrapped around her boxer dog, who, like her, is reclined and calm yet alert and poised. Both subjects reflect the American standard of confidence and strength without sacrificing elegance and control.
