Description
Large platter with hand painted pheasants, artist signed "L. Conderly," porcelain marks by Coronet Limoges France and "B M de M, Limoges France".
The mark "B M de M" was the mark of P.M. Mavaleix (this mark is actually a "P M" with a fancy loop added instead of B M. This porcelain manufacturing company operated from 1908 until 1914. [Reference: Ludwig Danckert's "Directory of European Porcelain: Marks, Makers and Factories"]
The Coronet mark belongs Borgfeldt Trading Company, an American importer of European porcelain. George Borgfeldt was born in Meldorf, Germany in 1833, and immigrated to America in 1855. He established a trading company in Nashville in 1861 and moved to New York City in 1881, where he founded the Borgfeldt Trading Company. [Reference: Mary Gaston. Condition
The platter is c.11” [27.9cm] across, has scalloped edges trimmed in gold, slightly bluish painted background [some surface wear]; there are two holes in the rim to hang the platter as a decoration; two long hairlines and c. 1” x 1” spot with scratches to the glazed surface on the bottom side [both almost invisible on the photos]; good+/ very good condition.
